Trail Overview
Starting in Sand Canyon, this single-wide narrow trail wastes no time climbing a shelf road above the canyon floor, creating dramatic views. Sandy surface with loose rocks forms the roadbed as you navigate various switchbacks and ruts ascending the shelf. Interesting rock formations punctuate the climb. Normally, very little vegetation exists, but good years bring some green and blooming wildflowers, transforming the landscape. A marked washout near the trail's end creates difficulty for wide vehicles to pass, with nowhere to turn around at that critical point, forcing commitment. The trail culminates at a small turnaround for those who make it past the washout obstacle.
Difficulty
The single wide narrow shelf road above Sand Canyon creates exposure demanding precise navigation and steady nerves. Be very cautious of washouts after rains, as shelf roads are particularly vulnerable to erosion. Those various switchbacks on a sandy surface with loose rocks require careful throttle control and line selection. The marked washout near the end, forcing wide vehicles into difficulty with no turnaround, creates a commitment trap. Small turnaround at the end requires careful maneuvering. High clearance and four wheel drive essential for this exposed shelf route.
