Trail Overview

Winding through a beautifully dense and rolling alpine landscape, Blue Lakes Road - FS 9N01 is a scenic route situated within the majestic Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The journey begins where it smoothly overlaps with the paved Deer Valley Road, eventually passing through a seasonal gate situated right at the edge of Blue Lake near the dam. Outdoor enthusiasts frequently utilize this picturesque drive to access the PG&E-managed Twin Lake day-use area—which features a convenient paved parking lot, lakeside picnic tables, garbage receptacles, and a vault toilet—or to reach the final parking area that serves as the trailhead for a gorgeous 1/4-mile hike down to Meadow Lake. While older maps may show the road continuing all the way down to Meadow Lake, intentionally placed boulders now block vehicle access, preserving the final stretch for foot traffic only. Along the drive, visitors will enjoy a peaceful forest environment, eventually passing a small seasonal stream and a vibrant, flowery meadow just before the road's end.

Difficulty

Earning a highly accessible Grade 1 difficulty rating, this is primarily a hard-packed dirt forest road that features a few paved sections at the start and at the main parking areas. The route is straightforward and perfect for a relaxing drive, though you will encounter a steep, immediate uphill climb right after the Blue Lake gate that shows mild signs of water erosion and rutting before leveling out. While it is mostly a single-lane road with plenty of wide spots for passing, there are a couple of narrower pinches where large boulders sit on one side and trees on the other. Take these tight spots slowly, carefully evaluate your width before passing, and easily splash through the shallow, muddy stream crossing near the end. Because there are no deep washouts, massive rocks, or severe technical obstacles, elevated ground clearance and four-wheel drive are entirely unnecessary to comfortably enjoy this beautiful lakeside trail during the dry season.
