Trail Overview
This trail features hard-packed sand, which can get very muddy when wet, so conditions matter significantly. The route follows an electrical pole line and heads toward Superstition Mountain, which serves as a prominent landmark. You'll encounter a lot of washboards and whoops with some off-camber sections, creating a very bumpy road that will test your suspension throughout. After a mile, the trail turns to softer sand, changing the character. There are some deeper off-camber sections and ruts to cut through up to 12 inches that demand attention. The trail is lined with creosote bushes and seasonal wildflowers framing your journey. At mile 2.5, it drops into a wash with mud walls 2 to 3 feet high, creating a small canyon environment. Near the end, there are a couple drop offs under 18 inches that come out of nowhere, so stay alert. The trail ends at the base of Superstition Mountain, where you can see the remnants of a past avalanche, with railroad tracks running perpendicular to the route. Cell phone service comes and goes throughout.
Difficulty
The hard-packed sand that gets very muddy when wet means this trail's difficulty varies significantly with conditions. The very bumpy road with lots of washboards and whoops is jarring. The deeper off-camber sections and ruts up to 12 inches require high clearance and careful navigation. The drop-offs under 18 inches near the end that come out of nowhere are serious hazards requiring vigilance. Avoid in wet conditions when the surface becomes treacherous mud.
