Trail Overview
This very narrow, loose-sand trail weaves through the desert and hillside with no room for vehicles to pass. Ruts reach 6–8 inches deep, with frequent rock gardens containing rocks ranging from 2–8 inches in diameter. The loose sand can become considerably more difficult when wet. 4WD or AWD is recommended but not required. Camping is abundant throughout the route, with numerous level campsites accommodating approximately six to 10 vehicles each. Many include fire rings and provide easy access to the surrounding desert terrain.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 2 because of the 6–8-inch ruts, frequent 2–8-inch rock gardens, and narrow sandy terrain. 4WD or AWD is recommended for improved traction, but there are no major technical obstacles.
History
The BLM lands around Sawtooth Canyon reflect the long history of California’s Mojave Desert, where Indigenous peoples traveled and lived for thousands of years before miners, ranchers, and settlers arrived in the 1800s. The surrounding desert also contains remnants of the region’s mining and homesteading era, while its rugged volcanic rock formations preserve a much older geologic history.
