Trail Overview

This 4.5-mile out-and-back route serves as an engaging diversion from the Barntop Trail, inviting travelers to explore the varied terrain of the Modoc National Forest. The journey begins with a transit through rugged forest landscapes before the path splits near the third-mile mark, where drivers have the option to traverse an alternate loop that eventually rejoins the primary track. Upon reaching the summit of the hill, the trail opens into a serene, flat meadow that serves as a high-altitude lookout. From this vantage point, travelers are rewarded with clear, striking views of Mount Shasta’s distant peak, as well as an expansive vista encompassing the surrounding rolling hills and deep valleys.

Difficulty

The trail is composed of loose dirt with scattered small rocks throughout. The surface is generally stable but uneven, contributing to a bouncy ride that requires constant attention to speed to maintain vehicle control and passenger comfort. This trail serves as a genuine test for vehicles with stock suspension systems due to its frequent undulations. While the route is navigable in two-wheel drive with high-quality tires, four-wheel drive paired with high clearance is highly recommended to manage the terrain comfortably. Drivers must contend with a center median heavily obscured by overgrown brush and tall grasses, which necessitates careful line selection to prevent undercarriage contact. The track can be notably bouncy, and the inclusion of the alternate loop adds a layer of complexity for those seeking to test their vehicle's articulation and handling over uneven ground.
