Trail Overview
This bypass route serves as an optional loop that begins and ends along the Barntop Spur. It offers a concise journey through the rolling landscape of the region, providing travelers with elevated perspectives of the surrounding hills and mountains. A significant highlight of this trail is the prominent view of Mount Shasta, which anchors the horizon and offers a stunning backdrop to the local topography. While the trail is relatively short, it provides a sense of seclusion and rewards the driver with expansive mountain vistas that are particularly impressive during clear-weather days in the high-desert environment.
Difficulty
The trail surface is composed of loose dirt interspersed with small rocks. It is generally smooth, lacking large boulders or technical ledges, which allows for a consistent pace once the route is clearly identified. The primary challenge of this loop is navigation and vegetation management rather than extreme terrain. While half of the trail is well-defined and easy to follow, the remaining portion is heavily obscured by thick, overgrown grass, making the path difficult to identify. Drivers must exercise caution to stay on the correct route and be mindful of the potential for the overgrown vegetation to contact the undercarriage. High clearance is an absolute requirement for this trail to successfully navigate the dense brush and protect vehicle components from hidden obstacles concealed within the median.
