Trail Overview
5-Horsepower Cut-Off travels over fine, loose dirt and sand that can become more difficult when wet. The trail is narrow but has occasional room to pull aside for passing. Ruts and washes begin around 8–12 inches deep, with several larger wash crossings reaching approximately 18 inches. 4WD or AWD is recommended but not required. The route provides continuous 360° views of the surrounding mountains and abundant camping throughout. Numerous level campsites offer excellent mountain views with options suitable for both solo travelers and larger groups. The trail continues until connecting with Front Sight Road.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 2 because of its loose sandy surface, 8–12-inch ruts, and wash crossings reaching 18 inches. 4WD or AWD is recommended for improved traction and clearance, but the route does not require significant technical driving.
History
The BLM lands south of Pahrump lie along historic travel corridors used by Indigenous peoples for generations and later by Spanish explorers, miners, ranchers, and settlers crossing the Mojave Desert. Portions of the nearby Old Spanish Trail became an important 19th-century trade route connecting settlements in New Mexico with Southern California, leaving the region with a long history of desert travel and exploration.
