Trail Overview
Middle Fork Illinois Bayou is an exciting, tight-clearance trail perfect for four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs looking for a scenic descent into the heart of the Ozarks. Stretching nearly four miles, this route offers a challenging mix of steep elevation changes, ranging from 740 feet to nearly 1,785 feet, and dense foliage that guarantees a bit of trail pinstriping. Traveling from east to west, offroaders will navigate a series of easy-to-moderate descents with tight squeezes around fallen trees, which can prove difficult for wider, full-sized rigs. Once at the bottom, the trail drops into the beautiful bayou area, tracking along the creek bed where a water crossing up to 18 inches deep awaits.
After making the creek crossing, drivers should note that continuing north along the creek is entirely washed out and impassable, requiring a turn to tackle the steep, narrow ascent out of the canyon. This climb features loose dirt and rocky surfaces with gradients pushing up to 25 degrees, demanding steady throttle control and careful tire placement. Due to the tight clearances and water depth, high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles or capable SxSs are highly recommended, especially during the wetter spring and winter seasons when the creek levels rise. Located just five and a half miles north of the Bayou Bluff Campground off Highway 27, this route serves as a perfect, quick adventure that pairs well with surrounding forest roads.
