Trail Overview

This maintained Gravel road goes up to Hickory Nut Vista Lookout. As you travel to the vista you will pass Hickory Nut Campground on the left side of the road. This is a dispersed campground with a pit toilet, picnic tables, and a fire ring. Awesome views of Lake Ouachita can be seen. This road does have some bumpy spots and loose gravel areas but is easily traveled. The view from the top is spectacular overlooking Ouachita Lake. On one end of Hickory Nut Mountain Campground is the Hickory Nut Mountain/Vista Trail. There is a rougher trail to the east side of Hickory Nut Vista Lookout. This trail can be closed at times by gate.

This is a normal gravel road that leads to a beautiful overlook of lake Ouachita. Plenty of parking available and lots of dragonflies.

Trail started out dusty packed gravel and at the end of the trail turned into large rocks. Unfortunately we were doing a road trip to visit Hot Springs and didn’t bring any kit for airing down/up. Fun trail and great scenery. Rocky section that connects Hicory nut to the vista trail is not for the faint of heart due several areas where the trail gets very close to the cliff edge.
