Trail Overview
This out-and-back route follows a narrow two-track through a beautiful mix of mature hardwoods and towering pines, creating a quiet drive beneath a dense green canopy. The route alternates between gravel and packed dirt with a grassy center strip, winding through peaceful forest before briefly emerging alongside an open meadow where sunlight spills across the landscape. Gentle curves and rolling terrain keep the drive interesting, while scattered whoops and shallow dips caused by natural water erosion add minor variation to the otherwise easy route. Wildlife is commonly seen throughout the area, particularly deer and wild turkey, and drivers should remain alert for the possibility of downed trees following storms. The route ends at a seasonally operated gate. If the gate is open, travel may continue beyond this point; if it is closed, use the available space to turn around and return the way you came.
Difficulty
The route is primarily gravel and packed dirt with a few shallow whoops and erosion dips that require only minor speed reduction. There are no significant obstacles, steep climbs, or technical sections. Drivers should remain alert for wildlife, potential downed trees after storms, and the seasonal gate at the end of the route, which may require turning around if closed.
History
The Ozark National Forest was established in 1908 and today forms part of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests, protecting more than one million acres across northern Arkansas. Many of the Forest Service roads traveled today began as logging, fire access, or resource management roads before becoming part of the modern recreation network. Forest management continues to play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through timber management, prescribed fire, wildlife habitat restoration, and watershed protection. The rugged Boston Mountains and surrounding Ozark Highlands remain one of the oldest and most geologically significant mountain regions in North America, offering visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and rich forest history.
