Trail Overview

This out-and-back gravel route winds through a dense hardwood and pine forest, offering a peaceful drive beneath a canopy of mature trees. The route is generally one vehicle wide, with occasional pull-off areas that make it easy to allow oncoming traffic to pass. Gentle curves keep the drive interesting without presenting any technical challenges. Signs of previous water erosion line portions of the route, while thick undergrowth, towering pines, and large hardwoods create a secluded feel throughout the route. Several sections pass beneath arching tree limbs that form a natural tunnel, making the drive especially scenic during the spring and summer months.

Difficulty

The route is well maintained with a firm gravel surface and gentle curves. There are no rock obstacles, water crossings, deep ruts, or technical sections requiring specialized equipment. Drivers should remain alert for loose gravel on corners, occasional washboard sections, wildlife, and the possibility of fallen branches or downed trees after storms. Two-way traffic is possible, though some sections may require one vehicle to use a pull-off to allow another to pass.

History

The Ozark National Forest was established in 1908 and today forms part of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests, protecting more than one million acres across northern Arkansas. Many of the Forest Service roads traveled today began as logging, fire access, or resource management roads before becoming part of the modern recreation network. Forest management continues to play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through timber management, prescribed fire, wildlife habitat restoration, and watershed protection. The rugged Boston Mountains and surrounding Ozark Highlands remain one of the oldest and most geologically significant mountain regions in North America, offering visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and rich forest history.
