Trail Overview

This out-and-back route follows a quiet, one-lane gravel road winding beneath a dense canopy of mature hardwoods in the Ozark National Forest. Throughout the drive, the road gently curves through the forest, with sunlight filtering through the trees and lush green vegetation lining both sides. The scenery is peaceful and secluded, offering a true backcountry experience with very little evidence of development. The road surface is generally smooth with only minor gravel, shallow drainage dips, and light washboarding in a few areas, making for an easy drive. Because the route is only one vehicle wide, passing opportunities are extremely limited, so be prepared to back up if another vehicle is encountered. Watch for wildlife, especially deer, and be aware that downed trees can occasionally block the road after storms. At the end of the route, the road opens into a clearing created by past logging activity. This is the appropriate turnaround point, as continuing beyond the clearing will lead to a private driveway.

Difficulty

The gravel surface is well maintained with no significant obstacles, ledges, or steep climbs. The primary challenges are the narrow, one-vehicle-wide roadway with very limited passing opportunities, occasional shallow drainage dips, and the possibility of downed trees after storms. Wildlife is common throughout the area, so maintain a moderate speed and remain alert around corners. The turnaround is in a logging clearing at the end of the route, as continuing farther leads to a private driveway.

History

The Ozark National Forest was established in 1908 and today forms part of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests, protecting more than one million acres across northern Arkansas. Many of the Forest Service roads traveled today began as logging, fire access, or resource management roads before becoming part of the modern recreation network. Forest management continues to play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through timber management, prescribed fire, wildlife habitat restoration, and watershed protection. The rugged Boston Mountains and surrounding Ozark Highlands remain one of the oldest and most geologically significant mountain regions in North America, offering visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and rich forest history.
