Trail Overview

This forest road offers an easy drive through a mix of pine and hardwood timber with gentle elevation changes and several low-water crossings. The route is generally maintained and passable by most stock high-clearance vehicles, though drivers should remain alert for embedded rocks, blind corners, and active logging traffic. The road ranges from approximately one to one-and-a-half vehicles wide throughout most of its length. While there are occasional wider sections suitable for passing, meeting oncoming traffic may require one driver to yield. Three concrete low-water crossings are present along the route. The surface consists primarily of gravel with scattered exposed rocks. Most rocks are minor, but some protrude several inches above the surrounding surface. Vehicles with low ground clearance or low-profile tires should use caution to avoid underbody or tire damage. Overall, this is a scenic and straightforward forest drive with minimal technical difficulty, making it suitable for beginners, stock vehicles, and travelers exploring the area.

Difficulty

There are no significant technical obstacles, deep mud, steep ledges, or challenging water crossings. The primary considerations are narrow road width, embedded rocks, blind corners, and potential encounters with logging trucks. Drivers of low-clearance vehicles should pay attention to exposed rocks throughout the route.

History

The Ouachita National Forest was established in 1907 and is recognized as the oldest national forest in the southern United States. Many roads found throughout the forest today originated as logging, timber management, fire access, or resource extraction routes before becoming part of the modern Forest Service road network. Forest management remains an important part of the landscape, and travelers may encounter evidence of prescribed burns, timber thinning, and habitat restoration efforts. The Ouachita Mountains themselves are among the oldest mountain ranges in North America and are notable for their unique east-west orientation.
