Trail Overview

Pucker Ridge Bat Cave is a short, scenic spur trail designed for offroaders looking to combine a quick drive with an adventurous hike to a hidden desert cave. Spanning just 0.2 miles near Whitford Canyon in the Tonto National Forest, this route features a brief but steep climb with a technical rating of 3, making it accessible to most high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and capable stock SUVs. The trail climbs slightly to a high point around 2,570 feet, offering rugged desert views of the surrounding canyon country before terminating at the edge of a wash. At the end of the drivable route, visitors can embark on an approximate one-hour hike by scrambling down a small wash that connects to a larger drainage leading directly to the namesake Bat Cave. The hike requires some light rock scrambling, and visitors should exercise caution inside the cave due to the presence of bat guano and the potential risk of histoplasmosis. This trail is best visited during the cooler fall, winter, and spring months, and serves as an excellent side trip when exploring the larger Forest Development Road network near Superior, Arizona.
