Trail Overview
PE1056 begins after PE1080 in a wash and quickly climbs into the hills, following a rocky shelf road alongside the power lines. The route winds around the mountains with stunning, expansive views in every direction. The trail is surrounded by classic desert terrain: lots of creosote, cactus, loose rock, and gravel. Several sections are along a ledge with a steep drop-off on one side; 4WD is recommended, particularly for the steeper sections. The trail connects to the Black Hills Back Country Byway and includes a campsite tucked into a mountain saddle with beautiful views. Continuing along the route, each climb gains additional elevation until reaching a cattle guard and gate. Keep the gate closed and leave it as you found it. Beyond the gate, the trail becomes significantly steeper and looser, with steep climbs, loose rock, and additional shelf-road exposure. 4WD and low range are strongly recommended for this section. This is a fantastic trail for a leisurely drive, especially if you're looking for elevation, mountain scenery, and some of the best views in the area. Livestock travel this trail, so share the road.
