Good trail. One wash part has a few parts where theres a 3 foot drop off. There are roads to easily get around. Just that one section of wash. Just be caredul if going fast

The trail was in pretty good shape considering all of the recent stormy weather and rain, we rode it in the clockwise direction. I had not ridden this trail since November of last year and had heard it had been graded recently, but I was concerned about the switchbacks, because they were narrow and challenging last time, but this time they were nice and wide and in good shape and were no trouble at all. The reason I say the trail is rough is because there are some area crossing washes that can be rough, and there are a lot of areas that are rough and rocky due to the rain washing away dirt and sand and just leaving rocks. The Hewlitt station connector trail was VERY rough for a good portion of it an the trail did disappear into the wash a few times. Definitely need 4 wheel drive with good ground clearance for one particular washout (pictured), and detour through a wash to avoid a cattleguard that has had all surrounding dirt washed away and is now impassible (see picture). Rough but doable.

Trail was recently graded. Trail is easy with no major obstacles or drop offs. I would rate the trail a 2-3 based on current conditions, but will change over time. Still a good scenic trail to visit for a family trip.

About 1/3 of the way down this trail they have freshly graded and the trail is extremely loose. I needed front and rear lockers to get up the hill in a stock Rubicon.

Completed this trail counter clockwise in about 3 hours. Not much traffic but on the switchbacks and ridge there’s like no room or much opportunity to pass. Switchbacks were tight but overall nothing too steep or challenging. Only real little obstacle was along the ridge where there was a rutted rocky spot and I used my rear locker. The views at the top were amazing! The descent was easy with just one steep corner that got my adrenaline going. On the way back to the road, the area around Byous Butte was amazing!

Fun spur of the moment trip to get out for a couple hours. Bit bumpy and technical in a couple spots but fun drive!

Montana Mountain Loop is comprised of 3 trails: Hewitt Canyon Trail, Rogers Trough & Happy Camp Rd and is about 30 miles total. US-60 east to Queen Valley Rd, just past AZ-79.
You can run the loop in either direction. We started on Hewitt Canyon Trail (FS 172) after airing down at the staging area. This part of the loop is full-width & mostly a gravel dirt road until you start gaining elevation. The trail connects to Rogers Trough (172A), which is somewhat rocky and connects to Happy Camp Rd (650).
Expect sandy washes at lower elevations and rocky switchbacks up and down the trails. Elevation tops out a little over 5,000'. There are some washouts & some tight turns along shelf roads. A few off-camber spots with minor rock obstacles.
With a lunch stop at the start of the third section we spent about 6 hours on trail.
Scenery is pretty amazing; be sure to stop to view Montana Mtn Arch and take note of sections where the Arizona Trail crosses your path.
Happy Camp Rd empties to US-60 near Boyce Thompson.

Trail S 1000, 28" tires, 62" wide. Beautiful ride with never ending views. For our unit, we rate this trail a 5/6 only because there area few technical boulder climbs and washouts with sticky ledges. While riding, there is a small view of the top of the large mine that is located in Miami. Overall, it's not a complicated trail except the few obstacles. Ride time about 5 hrs with stops

Lots of washouts. Large boulders going into the wash’s. Deep washed out pockets on the Northern part most on off camber steep edges. This was the trail to the west, if I remember it was 1900

Me and some of my party member laid it over twice and I got stuck 3 times. This was the worst trail I’ve ever been on. It took us 6 hours start to finish. DO NOT ATTEMPT ON DIRTBIKE

Trail took us about 5 hours starting at Hewlett and exiting at the 60 by Superior. Trail is 45% dirt road with 20% being super rocky. One really technical part my dad in a full-size super duty struggled with a bit but made it fine when I spotted him. Beautiful trail!

Took about 3.5 hours total with some stops. Beautiful views all around and the switchbacks going up and down the mountain are awesome. Passed a group that had a broken down truck(control arm), it definitely did not belong on this trail. First 33% of the trail was easy, and then it starts to get harder as you go up and down the mountain. Definitely recommend 35’s and a lift for an easy time. Had no issues at all, and went alone. I don’t recommend that since this one is so long. I can see how this one could get much harder if its wet out.
