Trail Overview

Middle Wash is a 3-mile sand wash trail in the Hayfield Draw OHV area. The west end starts at the intersection with Aultman, and it goes east until it intersects with the Sand Wash #527 trail. The west end is more narrow, as it goes in and out of the wash, sometimes elevated above the wash. It also requires a bit of route finding because the wash has several splits, so a GPS map is helpful. It gets wider as it goes east. Most of it is an easy sand wash with some loose rocks, but it's mostly just shallow sand and lots of curves. There is one rock ledge obstacle in the wash which is a 1-2 foot high ramped ledge that would be trickier for an ATV, but no problem for a dirt bike.

Access Description

The Hayfield Draw OHV area near Camp Verde, Arizona, accesses 80 acres of motorized cross-country areas and trails for dirt bikes and ATVs of 50 inches or less in the Prescott National Forest. The area is open seasonally from September 1 to May 31 since it is too hot to ride during the summer. There are about 8 ATV trails accessed from this staging area of easy to intermediate difficulty, and you can connect to the Copper Canyon OHV area by taking the Camp Verde trail 11 miles south, but the Copper Canyon trails are much more rocky and difficult. The Hayfield Draw staging area has restrooms, shaded picnic tables, and garbage service. It is day-use only and costs $5 per vehicle, except it is free on Wednesdays.
