Trail Overview
FS 9650C begins off Old Cherry Hill Road at the Grief Hill Trailhead, which includes a well-maintained staging area with vault toilets and room for parking. After passing through the gate, continue straight as the trail heads out into the rolling desert hills.
This is a point-to-point trail consisting mostly of dirt and gravel terrain with occasional ruts and washouts. While not highly technical, high clearance is recommended due to uneven sections, loose rocks, and several bumpier stretches containing rocks roughly 6–10 inches in size.
The trail winds through open high desert terrain surrounded by natural grasses, creosote, and scattered desert vegetation. Some portions have tighter overgrowth along the edges, making light pinstriping possible for wider vehicles.
Along the route, expansive views open overlooking Camp Verde and the surrounding hills near Cottonwood, and the nearby mountain ranges stretching across the Verde Valley region
This is a scenic and moderately rough backcountry trail best suited for drivers looking for beautiful desert views, a quieter, remote route, and access to elevated overlooks without major technical obstacles.
Difficulty
Few ruts and loose rocks, with tight vegetation in some sections. Impassable in bad weather, nothing technical, and no obstacles found. Small rock garden found in a short hill section, watch speed
