Trail Overview

This is a continuation of the White Horse Trail. It is pretty easy, and you will only find it to be a Forest Service road with washboard, some exposed rock, and the occasional root from a tree. The view, the aspen trees, and huge pines make it a very enjoyable excursion around the San Francisco mountain, which is 12K feet high. There is one section where you will encounter a few houses, so be aware of that. When you get to the end, there are campsites all around.

Difficulty

Not difficult at all, just a forest service road with washboard, some small exposed rock, and the occasional rut or washed out portion. All of which were easy and required nothing more than slowing down.

Light traffic in both directions throughout the trail. Logging operations, bike race, and running race. Beautiful and easy way to see the leaves change, though. Not technical, and was in two-wheel drive except for a single quarter- to half-mile section of embedded rocks/roots.

Very scenic. Dense mix of Ponderosa Pine/Aspen forest with open meadow. Great views of San Francisco Peak. Mostly single lane gravel road with minimal washboarding. Steep shoulders, but just enough room to pass oncoming vehicles. Active logging in the area. Road was very rough with exposed rock, deep ruts and wet for last mile or two. Turned back early.

Very easy forest road. Road is some what busy. Parts of the road will be right of way only as there isn’t enough space at times for 2 vehicles to cross. Road is very scenic. Trail has some exposed rock along the way. Very easy to do for suvs and trucks.
