Trail Overview
9001L Road is a scenic 1.9-mile dirt trail northwest of Flagstaff that is perfect for stock high-clearance 4WD vehicles looking for a quick, beautiful mountain drive with light trail obstacles. Beginning just off US Highway 180 near Little Horse Tank, the route rises from an elevation of 7,982 feet to a maximum of 8,258 feet as it winds through Coconino National Forest. It offers offroaders an easy but engaging drive with a few minor rock obstacles that rate it a 3 out of 10 in technical difficulty, making it accessible yet entertaining.
The trail stands out for its beautiful views of the surrounding peaks and groves of white-barked aspen trees, which are especially vibrant during the autumn months. Multiple dispersed camping spots are scattered along the route, providing excellent base camps for exploring nearby trails like Fern Mountain Road, where this route terminates.
Access Description
This road is located within the Coconino National Forest and is not winter maintained. During wet conditions or spring snowmelt, the dirt surface becomes extremely muddy and slick. A high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended due to minor rock obstacles. No permit or fee is required to drive the road, and dispersed camping is permitted along the route in accordance with US Forest Service guidelines.
