Trail Overview

FR223 - Fire Point is a 7.2-mile point-to-point trail rated 3 of 10 located within the Kaibab National Forest, North Kaibab Ranger District. This does not include the first 5.8 miles of FR223 which is included in the Point Sublime featured trail. Starting at FSR268 continue straight past FR609 and NF4008. The further down the rail the rougher the road gets. Neither the National Forest Service nor the Grand Canyon National Park Service maintains this road. A cattle guard marks the boundary between the forest and the Grand Canyon National Park, remember unlicensed vehicles are not allowed within the park. After the park boundary, the trail gets rougher and narrower. There are quite a few tight sections where a slow pace and careful navigation are required. The road ends at the Fire Point overlook. Park in the roundabout area and head west to see an incredible view looking west into the Grand Canyon. The Kaibab National Forest borders both the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon, in north-central Arizona consisting of 1.6 million acres divided into three sections. The North Kaibab Ranger District is located exclusively north of the Grand Canyon on the Kaibab Plateau. The Kaibab Plateau is an island surrounded by lower elevations. The plateau, with elevation up to 9,215 feet is bordered on the south by the Grand Canyon, on the east and the west by tributary canyons of the Colorado River, and on the North by tiers of the Vermillion cliffs. Cell phone service is intermittent or nonexistent throughout the area. The nearest fuel service is located in Jacobs Lake or Fredonia. Full services are located in Fredonia or Kanab, Utah.

In 1908, the Forest Reserve north of the Grand Canyon, including the game preserve, was renamed Kaibab National Forest.
