Trail Overview

FR 272 is a 6.6-mile point-to-point trail rated 3 of 10 located in the Kaibab National Forest. FR 272 passes through a ponderosa pine and aspen forest. Two miles west from the intersection of FR 214 and 272, the trail has a moderately steep downgrade with loose rock and ledges. There are a few dispersed campsites along the trail and plenty more along the numerous spur trails. The trail is narrow in many areas and the low areas tend to collect water and make the trail muddy. The trail is open year-round; however, it is not plowed in the winter and may be inaccessible due to snow. There is no cell phone coverage in the area, and the nearest fuel is either at Jacob Lake or inside the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park (entry fee required). The nearest services can be found in Fredonia.

I drove the entire length of FR272, starting at Crazy Jug, heading uphill to the intersection with Parissawampitts Pt. I'm a beginner 4x4 driver, and the first 1/4 mile of this road was stressful (in a good way) but not actually too challenging. It's steep, narrow, and rocky with a few ledges that you have to go over. Any of those things on their own, no big deal, but all three at the same time required my full attention. Made it through no problem, and the remainder of the trail is effectively a gravel/dirt road. If you're also new to 4x4 I would avoid the west end of this road if it's wet.
