Trail Overview

This short, rugged spur is ideal for offroaders looking to access the secluded Dorsey Spring Trailhead in the Coconino National Forest, offering a scenic and challenging connector through dense ponderosa pines. Branching off from Forest Road 538 (Secret Mountain Road), this route serves as the primary gateway to pristine wilderness hiking and horseback riding. The path features a predominantly dirt surface but contains very rocky sections that demand high-clearance four-wheel drive. Offroaders will navigate a narrow, mostly single-car-width corridor that winds past Casner Tank before terminating at the spacious trailhead parking area. Because of its high elevation and remote setting, the route is closed and unmaintained during the winter season. When wet, the dirt surface quickly turns to deep mud, making traction difficult and increasing the potential for trail damage. Stock vehicles without sufficient clearance may struggle with the rocky obstacles, making a capable 4x4 or high-clearance SxS highly recommended for a safe journey. After arriving at the large turnaround at the end, visitors can transition to foot or horseback to explore the stunning, rugged wilderness of the surrounding canyons.
