Trail Overview
This is a spur section of the AZPT trail running from a mountaintop campsite to the living ghost town of Chloride. This trail can be connected to the Sleeping Princess trail;however, that section has yet to be run and is most likely rated a 4 or higher. The AZPT Spur to Chloride has some loose, steep, rocky sections on the west end to get to the mountainside campsite. It is a small dispersed campsite at the summit that looks out over a valley. There are some narrow washouts on this end of the trail and off-camber sections. There are some private mines along the trail. Around these mines there is better trail maintenance, making it less rocky and much wider for vehicles to pass. There are some off-shoot trails near Sugarloaf Mountain. One short one has a nice dispersed campsite that can accommodate multiple vehicles. The main trail crosses Highway 93, heading to Chloride. There is a wire gate on the Chloride side of the highway. It is BLM land;remember to close any gates you go through that were closed when you got to them. The trail turns sandy and becomes a wash. Some sections of the wash are narrow with overgrown trees. Eventually, the trail makes its way through some neighborhoods on the outskirts of town. Drive slow and enjoy all the different desert homes. You might spot a couple of pet donkeys along the way or the old stone house. The trail will finally end at the 125. This paved road goes into the center of town or back out to Highway 93. The trail around the neighborhoods can be muddy after a good rainstorm. Or dusty when it has been dry. There is no cell service on the west end of this trail in the mountains. There is cell service off Highway 93 and on the section of trail heading to Chloride.
Difficulty
Loose rocky hill climbs get you to the summit of the mountainside campsite. Expect sandy washes as well as some narrow, washed-out sections. There are a few short off-camber spots corresponding with the washouts.
