Trail Overview

Aqueduct Road begins just beyond an unmarked gate and quickly turns bumpy and rocky, though it remains relatively level at first. The trail crosses several washes as it climbs onto the rim, tracing the ridgeline for a stretch before descending into another wash, climbing again over rocky terrain, and finally dropping down near a cattle station. Beyond this point, the road becomes rougher as it winds its way toward the Gila River, with several steep and rocky sections requiring a high-clearance 4x4. Frustratingly, the trail ends near the River View Campsite, but there is no crossing point over the river. Despite this abrupt ending, the route offers beautiful views and access to pristine desert surroundings. A few dispersed campsites can be found along the way, but there are no amenities such as trash disposal or water, and cell service may be limited.

History

The Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, established in 1990 and managed by the BLM, protects 23,000 acres of rare desert riparian habitat in southeastern Arizona. Centered around a scenic canyon formed by the Gila River, the area has a rich history of Indigenous use, Spanish exploration, and early American ranching. It was designated to preserve its diverse ecosystems--home to over 200 bird species, beavers, and native fish--alongside cultural sites and historic homesteads. Today, it offers recreation like rafting, hiking, and birdwatching while safeguarding a vital stretch of river in the desert.
