Trail Overview

This is a short trail through the Red Spring Pass trail system. It starts and ends off of Sardina Canyon Road (684), paralleling the main road as it winds through a rocky desert terrain full of mesquite trees and ocotillos. The middle of the trail rides over the "moonscape," which is an area of lighter colored slab rocks with short ledges and drop-offs that add some minor difficulty, but most of the rock layers are ramped and not too difficult to ride over. The trail becomes fainter in this area, but there are frequent trail posts in the rock to help guide the route. It's a unique area compared to the rest of the trail system. As it continues west, the trail climbs in and out of little rocky washes, with constant small softball-sized rocks that can ping you around. The trail crosses a wash road and climbs up the next hillside, and it looks like riders might miss this last segment of trail and stay in the wash because it becomes more primitive as it parallels the elevated above the wash. There is a moderate rock obstacle in this last segment that is a short rock ledge, but it is moderate because it is during a narrow side-hilling segment of the trail. The trail winds down to the wash and ends.

Difficulty

This trail is mostly a moderately easy route, with frequent loose rock and some bigger slab rock, but there is one more intermediate rock obstacle that is more ideal for intermediate riders, as it is on a narrow side-hilling section.

Access Description

There is an official staging area for the Red Spring Pass dirt bike trails four miles into Sardina Canyon Road (684). Enter Sardina Canyon at the Hunter Access Point from the Interstate 19 Frontage Road (exit the highway at Chavez Siding Road). The staging area is a large dirt parking lot with space for several vehicles and small trailers. There is a map and information kiosk, and two picnic tables. Overnight camping is not allowed in this lot; however, there are numerous dispersed camping spots along Sardina Canyon Road. The road in is very slow going and bumpy, with lots of loose rock and ruts, ideal mostly for high clearance 4x4 vehicles. This area gets used for illegal immigration - use caution and expect to see border patrol in the area.
