Trail Overview
Forty Dollar Road is mostly big loose rock with gravel. As the road levels out, there are more potholes and areas where water runs down the trail and turns into more of a dirt road. The road starts a bit rough and rocky with big loose rocks, uneven, and steeper at the beginning with brush overgrowing on both sides. The further up the road it opens up more and the overgrowth disappears. The road has a deep ditch area with rock. There are a lot of willows growing on this trail, and there is a sign of Moose, Deer, and Black Bear. Where the road turns left onto Knee Road, if you continue to go straight, the road passes through Muskeg with tarns on either side and signs of wildlife. Be careful if walking on the muskeg to keep to the high ground so you don't sink. Do not drive off the road! Past the muskeg, the road goes back into the trees and brush, where it ends with the road completely overgrown, and there is a spot to turn around or camp at the end of the road. This road has 1 connecting road - Knee road. There are a lot of wildlife in this area. Be safety minded as there is a sign of Bear, Moose, and Deer along this road. Wolves and Porcupines are also known to be in this area. Weather plays a part in the level of difficulty as this is in a rainforest and a lot of these roads are going through areas of muskeg/wetlands. There are sections of loose rock and parts of the road have drop offs. Many creeks go through or under this road. There are views of muskeg/wetlands and treed areas. This road starts on Three Lakes Loop and ends at where the road is overgrown. There is a spot that can be used as a turn around or camping at the end, as well as 2 other camping areas along the road. Knee road is a spur road towards the end of Forty Dollar on the left. Large Ferns, devil's club, tall grass, Lupine, Goats beard, as well as a variety of trees, lichens, moss, and flowers can be seen along the road. Views: Forested scenics, Meadows, and Muskeg/wetlands can be seen along the road. There are 3 dry camping spots along the road. Warnings: Keep on the road (Muskeg and wetlands), watch for signs of road deterioration or washouts due to heavy rainfall. Loose larger rocks at the beginning. Be mindful of wildlife, especially Bears. No cell service noted. Check weather conditions and be prepared for rain, fog with low visibility, and lower temperatures. It is a rainforest. Suggested best time of year: June - October. Note: This is a down and back road.
