Trail Overview
Canyon Creek Road is also called La Conte Lookout Road. It is mostly a dirt with gravel one lane road and has grass growing down the centerline with multiple pull out or turn around areas along the road. The mapped version of the road ends not long after the two campsites with picnic tables. The first campsite has a metal fire pit, the second campsite doesn't have a structured fire pit with burnt firewood on the grass. Both campsites overlook the La Conte Bay entrance and Fredrick Sound. They are decent campsites with parking, although not very level. There is plenty of parking off the trail for 2 or 3 vehicles at each site. Heading down the trail, there is a turn around spot where the road seems to end on the map. The closed road area is passable, just overgrown on the sides, and goes a bit farther to an area at the end that can be used as a campsite or turn around. On the drive back down the road, you can see views of Fredrick Sound. The road up to the first two campsites appears to be maintained, but after that it becomes overgrown. It is a one lane road that gets tighter as you go, but there is space to turn around at the campsites and might be possible for a very small trailer. See photos. Not recommended to bring anything other than a small trailer down this road. Overall, this road is scenic with views of La Conte Glacier and Fredrick Sound. You may be able to see Icebergs with binoculars or a spotting scope from the campsites. There are a lot of wildlife in this area. Be safety minded as there are bears, Wolves, Moose, Deer, and Porcupines along this road. There are a variety of trees, lichens, moss, and ferns that can be seen along the road. Views: Forested scenics, and view of Fredrick Sound and La Conte Bay. There are three camping spots seen along the road. Warnings: Keep on the road, watch for signs of road deterioration or washouts due to heavy rainfall. Be mindful of wildlife, especially Bears. No cell service noted. Check weather conditions and be prepared for rain, fog with low visibility, and lower temperatures. It is a rainforest. Suggested best time of year: June - October. Note: This road is a down and back.
