Trail Overview
Tier Drop Trail lives up to its name, gradually descending from 1,131 feet to 574 feet as it winds through varied terrain just inland from the Sea of Cortez. This trail is all about transitions--each section bringing its own challenge and feel. It begins with deep sand that demands lower tire pressure and steady throttle control. From there, the trail climbs slightly to a flat plateau of hard-packed sand, scattered with small rocks and shallow ruts. This section is smoother, but still requires caution to avoid high-centering on hidden rocks. The descent steepens as you drop into a wash filled with very deep, soft sand--arguably the most demanding stretch. The final portion levels out into small whoops and sandy ground mixed with little rocks, providing a more rhythmic, flowing finish. All along the way, the views are stellar: open desert framed by rugged mountain ranges and long vistas toward the Sea of Cortez--especially striking as the elevation drops.
Difficulty
The top section is mild (Rating 1), the wash is soft and technical (Rating 3), and the final stretch lands around a solid Rating 2. High clearance, 4WD, and off-road tires are required to complete this route safely.
