Trail Overview
Los Cuevitas Ridge Trail offers a scenic desert drive perfect for adventurers seeking a moderate off-road experience. Starting from the east side, the trail begins as a packed dirt road scattered with small rocks, providing a relatively smooth ride. As you progress farther from Highway 5, the terrain transitions into deeper sand, requiring careful navigation and making a high-clearance vehicle a wise choice. While 4x4 is not strictly necessary, it's recommended for added traction and peace of mind in the sandier sections. The trail climbs from 276 to 713 feet. This trail is rated a 2 for difficulty and is accessible to most off-road capable vehicles. Along the way, you'll enjoy sweeping views of the Los Cuevitas mountain range and a rich display of desert flora, making it a rewarding route for nature lovers and photographers alike.
Difficulty
Beginning from the east, the route starts with mostly packed sand interspersed with numerous small rocks. A few deeper sand patches--remnants of the recent Baja 250--can be encountered early on, but they are generally avoidable with careful navigation. As the trail continues, the sand becomes softer and finer, gradually deepening and requiring more attention, especially for 2WD vehicles. While not overly technical, this trail offers an ever-changing surface that challenges your driving skills just enough to keep it interesting. It's ideal for high-clearance vehicles, and 4x4 is recommended but not essential in good conditions.
