Trail Overview
This trail begins off Highway 286, marked by signs for three ranches, and starts as a well-maintained road that winds pleasantly through desert vegetation, crossing a few cattle guards along the way. After a couple of miles, the route takes a sharp 90-degree left turn into a wide arroyo. While multiple sets of tracks crisscross the sandy arroyo, choosing untouched areas often provides better traction, and 4WD may be necessary, particularly when traveling uphill. Heading downhill is noticeably easier. The arroyo eventually narrows and transitions into a more defined road that leads to the intersection of Highway 286 and the road to La Ventana. This scenic drive offers a wide-open desert and picturesque canyon-like terrain but should only be attempted in dry conditions, as it can become impassable after storms.
Difficulty
The initial section of this route is a well-maintained road, but once it turns left into the arroyo, you'll encounter sandy terrain for a few miles, making it designated for 4WD in dry conditions. The sand is the primary challenge here, but airing down your tires can significantly improve traction. With properly adjusted tire pressure, you may not even need to engage 4WD as long as you maintain steady momentum.
