Trail Overview
This narrow two-track trail begins at the main road and offers a scenic, varied drive down to the coast, ultimately leading into soft sands near the ocean. The route starts with a firm, hard-packed surface and a few chunky, rocky sections during the first mile before opening up into smoother terrain. You'll wind through a distinctive tunnel-like stretch of dusty desert brush, with vegetation towering overhead, before emerging into a sandier section that leads to a gradual descent toward the coastline. Sand depth along the way ranges from light to moderate, occasionally reaching three to four inches in brief sections. While the mapped trail technically ends just beyond an intersection, the path continues into deeper dunes and offers the option to connect with other beachside routes if your vehicle is capable of handling deep sand and steep grades. The return climb is manageable, making this a rewarding out-and-back for high-clearance vehicles with a proper traction setup.
Difficulty
Aside from a few short stretches of sand that may reach three to four inches deep--but without any steep inclines--this trail is generally straightforward. However, traveling in remote areas like this still calls for a properly equipped vehicle. Four-wheel drive and the ability to air down your tires can make a big difference in traction and comfort. Additionally, cactus balls are often scattered along the route, so carrying a tire repair kit is highly recommended.
