Trail Overview

This remote off-road route begins off the road to Datil and Laguna San Ignacio and quickly sets itself apart from the typical overland experience. Initially, the trail is fairly smooth and sees light use from local ranchers, with some segments possibly tracing old Baja 1000 race lines. As you descend into the valley, light sand gives way to a large silt bed leading up to a working ranch, where you'll likely be greeted by friendly goats, dogs, and hospitable owners who are happy to point you in the right direction. No gates need opening, but navigation through the corrals and under low trees requires attention. Past the ranch, the trail becomes ambiguous, blending into a web of animal tracks and open terrain. A short but steep and deeply rutted sand climb marks the most technical section--best suited for small high-clearance 4WDs or side-by-sides--after which the route becomes more defined. From here, you hug the rim of a mesa, rewarded with expansive desert views and several stunning, secluded campsites. The trail winds through shallow sand and mid-height desert scrub before a left turn reconnects you with another onX route or continues straight toward new terrain and more breathtaking vistas.

Difficulty

The higher difficulty rating on this trail is due to a single challenging feature located about half a mile past the ranch--a fairly steep climb with at least six inches of loose sand and little to no visible tracks aside from those left by animals. Tackling this section will require airing down your tires and engaging four-wheel drive. Beyond this obstacle, however, the rest of the route is relatively straightforward and easy to navigate.
