Trail Overview
This route begins just off the pavement in the town of San Juanico, and surprisingly, some of the roughest terrain may be the drive through town itself. Expect rocky, uneven surfaces before leaving town. Once outside the town limits, the trail drops into a stretch of deep silt beds that runs for about three-quarters of a mile. This section can be deceptively soft, and 4WD, along with aired-down tires, are highly recommended. After the silt, the trail transitions to packed sand with a narrow, deeply worn two-track path that winds through thick desert brush--tight but passable for full-size vehicles. As the route continues, small rocks begin to appear and increase steadily in both size and frequency. Over the final three miles, the trail turns into a rough, cobblestone-like road composed of loose rocks ranging from golf ball to baseball size, with larger rocks scattered throughout. This steady climb in terrain difficulty continues until the route connects with South Airport Road and the Dos Esteros Trail, offering a rugged but rewarding journey through the heart of Baja's desert landscape.
Difficulty
This route is rated 4WD due to deep silt beds and loose rock sections. Otherwise, it's a fairly straightforward but consistently rough trail where careful wheel placement is important to navigate the rocky terrain safely.
