Trail Overview
Starting from Cadeje Road, the first mile of the Loreto 500 Loop is a well-traveled path of shallow sand that leads directly through a working cattle ranch. This is one of the most frequently driven sections thanks to its ease of access and connection to local activity. Along the way, Loreto 500 arrows mark the route, and drivers will encounter a low-hanging tree that may require ducking or detouring for taller vehicles. After clearing the ranch, the trail climbs gently to a higher plateau where the landscape opens up into a wide expanse of clean, light-colored desert, offering striking views in every direction. A steady breeze from the Pacific often cools the area, making it one of the more pleasant sections year-round. From the high point, you'll catch distant views of San Juanico and the ocean before beginning a winding descent. The trail here features a few short, rutted grades, roughly 20 meters long, with soft sand or silt where the road has seen heavier use. As the descent ends, you'll reach a less scenic section where locals have burned trash, leaving the area near the intersection heavily littered. The trail concludes at the intersection with North Road Cutoff, another mapped route on onX.
Difficulty
This trail is not considered difficult and is rated a 2 primarily due to several shallow silt sections along the route. A 2WD vehicle with decent ground clearance and a driver experienced in navigating sandy terrain should be able to complete the trail without issue under normal, dry conditions.
