Trail Overview
This is the easiest and most well-maintained route connecting San Luis Gonzaga to Highway 1, offering a smooth and scenic drive through the heart of the Baja backcountry. Traveling southeast, the road passes through the small town of San Jose de la Palma and skirts several remote ranches along a wide, graded track where two vehicles can comfortably pass. While the trail is currently dry and easy to navigate, the rainy season or post-storm conditions can introduce 5 to 7 river crossings, which may require extra caution. This section ends at the San Evaristo split, where travelers can either continue straight toward the trail leading to Highway 1 near La Paz or turn north toward the coast and San Evaristo--though the northern route is significantly more technical and suited for experienced drivers.
Difficulty
In dry conditions, this route is suitable for any 2WD vehicle with decent ground clearance. However, caution is advised after recent storms, as several river crossings along the way may hold significant water and become difficult--or even dangerous--to pass.
