Trail Overview

This trail begins at the historic Hotel Punta Colorada, a once-renowned fishing resort that has long been closed. The route consists primarily of smooth, narrow sandy tracks, passing some oceanfront communities and gradually making its way toward the highway in the direction of Cabo Pulmo. A key challenge is a soft sand section where maintaining speed is crucial, especially for 2WD vehicles without deflated tires. After clearing this stretch, the trail winds through a salt flat, often populated with roaming cattle, requiring extra caution. Beyond this, the terrain transitions to firmer dirt roads, leading to the paved Camino Cabo Este. From this junction, turning left takes you to Cabo Pulmo, while a right leads toward Los Barriles.

Difficulty

This trail is easy to navigate and suitable for any 2WD vehicle. However, caution is needed in the soft sand section, where maintaining speed is key, and on the short salt flat stretch, where wet areas or deep tracks should be avoided if present.

History

Hotel Punta Colorada, once a legendary fishing resort on Baja California Sur's East Cape, played a pivotal role in the region's sportfishing boom. Established in the mid-20th century, it became famous for its access to world-class fishing waters, attracting anglers from around the globe seeking marlin, tuna, and roosterfish. The hotel thrived during the golden era of Baja tourism but eventually declined due to changing travel trends and competition from newer resorts. Today, the site remains a nostalgic landmark, with remnants of its past still visible, evoking memories of its heyday as a premier fishing destination.
