Trail Overview

This off-road adventure begins just off Highway 22, where a single wide dirt track invites you through an open barbed wire gate into the heart of Baja's desert landscape. The trail opens with light sand and scattered desert shrubs, gradually giving way to denser vegetation as you progress, culminating in a striking El Cordon cactus forest. A few miles in, the route veers right, tracing the edge of a salt flat for about a mile--caution is advised here, as even during dry conditions, the sulfur-rich center can hold water, and rain or high tides may cause flooding. After leaving the salt flat, the trail narrows again through thick desert brush before crossing a short salt flat at a key intersection. From here, left turns lead toward mangroves or bay inlets, while continuing straight takes you another mile before a brief left curve redirects you forward. As you near the coast, the towering cordon cacti become increasingly impressive. Eventually, the road bends left, offering your first glimpse of the bay, then right toward direct beach access. Beyond this point, the route continues, offering opportunities to explore several secluded, untouched beaches along the coastline.

Difficulty

While it's possible to navigate this route in a 2WD vehicle, airing down your tires is essential, and 4WD is highly recommended--even in dry conditions. If there has been recent rain or storms, the trail's condition can change dramatically, making 4WD necessary. Certain sections cross salt flats that are prone to holding water, and these areas can become impassable without proper traction.
