Trail Overview

Beginning at the northern end, Campo Delgadito initially resembles a wide dirt highway, winding along the edge of the salt flats with expansive views and gentle curves. The route skirts the Datil Salt Flats Road before veering southeast, hugging the shimmering edge of the salt beds. A sharp 90-degree turn leads onto a mile-long stretch of bright white flats, where the road has been subtly elevated and reinforced with small pebbles, designed to stay passable even when tides rise. On the far side, the trail turns before the sand dunes and traces the southern rim of the flats. Along the way, you'll spot mounds of giant clam shells, which are remnants of the thriving fish camp ahead. At the trail's end, nestled beside a mangrove-lined estuary, lies a remote fishing village with around 100 homes, a church, and a small school. While it lacks formal shops or services, the community offers a glimpse into a self-sustained coastal life, and in a pinch, you'll likely find fresh clams or fish and a helping hand if needed.

Difficulty

This is a well-packed, frequently traveled trail that's manageable for any vehicle with decent ground clearance. However, conditions around salt flats can shift quickly, especially after unusually high tides or severe weather such as hurricanes. What looks dry one day can become impassable the next. It's strongly advised to avoid crossing these areas when the ground is wet, as the surface can become dangerously soft and unpredictable.
