Trail Overview
This dirt and gravel road provides access to Winter Harbor, a small, remote fishing village on the northwest coast. The road is approximately two vehicles wide and can be accessed via West Main or South Main. At the end of town, you'll find The Outpost, a small store with fuel, a vital stop if you forget something. Please respect private property throughout this stretch, as much of the surrounding land is privately owned. After leaving Winter Harbor, the trail transitions into a scenic forest route lined with ferns, dense brush, and smaller trees. While the road is generally passable, expect a somewhat bumpy surface and a few scattered potholes.
Difficulty
Rated a 1 due to the relatively smooth road surface, wide width, and minimal obstacles. This trail is suitable for any 4WD and most high-clearance 2WD vehicles.
History
Early History: Winter Harbour has served as a refuge for mariners for over a century, with its sheltered harbor providing safe anchorage year-round and access to abundant fishing grounds. Logging and Fishing: The community's economy has been closely tied to logging and fishing. A major logging company, Moore Logging, operated there for decades before closing in 2017, impacting the local economy. Economic Challenges: The closure of Moore Logging resulted in job losses and the potential closure of essential services like the general store during the winter months. Current Status: Despite the economic challenges, Winter Harbour remains a small, unincorporated community with a population that has seen significant growth in recent years, according to Statistics Canada.
