Trail Overview
Suzanne Lake Road leads to the scenic Suzanne Lake, a popular destination featuring a very nice user-maintained camping area. This site is equipped with a convenient boat launch, pit toilets, and campfire rings with tables, making it an ideal spot for lakeside enjoyment. The northern section of the road is by far the best maintained and offers the quickest and easiest access from the paved road (tarmac). In contrast, the southern section is rougher, more densely forested, and can become very muddy when wet, adding to the adventurous spirit of the route. Expect one bar of cell service, so be sure to download your offline maps before heading out.
Difficulty
The northern section is well-maintained; the southern section is rougher, denser with trees, and can be very puddly when wet. Suitable for most vehicles, but caution is advised on the southern section.
History
Suzanne Lake Road is part of the broader Koocanusa Recreation Management Area, a region deeply tied to the Ktunaxa people for millennia. Like many routes here, it likely evolved from early access paths for logging or homesteading, providing access to valuable resources. The creation of Lake Koocanusa by the Libby Dam project in the late 1960s and early 1970s brought significant changes to the entire valley, transforming it into the recreational hub we enjoy today.
