Trail Overview

This well-traveled gravel, dirt, and rock forest road is approximately two and a half vehicle widths wide, providing reliable access to the Grant Bay Recreation Site, a popular destination for remote beach camping and scenic exploration. The trail is posted as an active logging road, so be sure to monitor radio frequency 152.36 MHz and practice appropriate logging road etiquette. Though typically quiet, logging operations may still occur, and right-of-way must be given to industrial traffic. The road is flanked by dense second-growth forest, part of a reforestation effort dating back to the 1960s, creating a unique corridor of 65-year-old trees and thick brush on both sides. The area features many spur trails leading in all directions, some of which may lead to side hikes, views, or private land (explore responsibly). This well-used connector route provides access to Grant Bay Recreation Site from either San Josef Main or Winter Harbor Main. The road is a mix of dirt, gravel, and embedded rock, making it easy to navigate for most vehicles. The trail runs through a reforested area dating back to the 1960s, now thick with 65-year-old trees and dense underbrush. You'll find spur trails branching off in multiple directions, inviting exploration, though some may require caution or additional clearance. The trail is relatively smooth, though potholes do occur in spots, especially after wet weather. Dust can be heavy in dry conditions, and wildlife such as black bears or deer may be encountered, so drive slow and stay alert.
