Trail Overview
Sheep Mountain (locally following the Bull Road corridor) is a scenic backcountry dirt route that runs parallel to Highway 93 and skirts the edge of the Sheep Mountain Conservation Area. It offers an enjoyable countryside bypass for drivers who want to stay off the pavement and on the dirt while soaking in expansive Rocky Mountain views. Before heading in, pause to read the posted kiosks and boundary signage. While this main corridor is one of the designated year-round open access roads through the conservation zone, all branching side trails are strictly closed to motorized vehicles. Although satellite imagery and maps may make it look like there are plenty of inviting dispersed camping pullouts along these side spurs, those areas are off-limits due to the conservation area's strict motorized access rules. If you are looking to set up a dispersed camp, skip this eastern side of the highway and head to the open Crown land trails on the western side of Highway 93 toward Lake Koocanusa. The drive itself transitions noticeably from south to north. The lower (southern) section is a rougher, narrower two-track that winds through tight stands of trees, featuring light rutting and the occasional mud hole or muddy washout. As you continue into the northern section, the corridor opens into a wider, easily graded road with only occasional potholes. Because this is an active multi-use corridor, drivers must stay alert and watch for mountain bikers, especially when coming around blind corners in the narrower wooded stretches. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, elk, and moose. Unlike some of the deeper river canyons nearby, this route enjoys pretty good cellular service throughout.
Difficulty
The trail has two distinct sections: the northern half is wide, graded gravel with minor potholes (1/10), while the southern lower section narrows into a tighter two-track with encroaching trees, light ruts, and the occasional mud hole or small washout that earns the trail its 2/10 rating. Any high-clearance 2WD or standard 4WD/AWD vehicle will handle this route comfortably in dry conditions.
