Trail Overview
This scenic cut-across connector trail in the Fussee Lake area keeps your tires on the dirt as you link routes and explore the surrounding backcountry. Rather than serving as a primary camping destination itself, this route is all about the drive, twisting and turning across open grassy meadows before bouncing through thicker treed sections. Whenever the trail breaks out of the timber into the meadow clearings, you are rewarded with great views of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. While there are no established campsites directly along the main Baker track, you will pass a couple of distinct offshoot spurs that clearly lead to tucked-away dispersed camping spots nearby. As you wind through the meadows and forest edges, keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife, including deer and elk. This is also active open-range grazing land, so stay alert for cattle roaming across the trail. Expect a few reliable bars of cellular service throughout this section of the woods.
Difficulty
Under normal summer weather, this is generally an easy drive, with the occasional mud hole and bumpy, rutted section. However, exercise extreme caution during the early spring thaw or after heavy rainfall. Expect deep, torn-up mud ruts from past vehicles; this shows that the soft meadow bottoms along this trail can quickly become boggy and impassable during the wet season.
