Trail Overview
This highly rewarding scenic trail loops beneath Fitzpatrick Road, offering access to a collection of stunning cliffside dispersed campsites perched high above Lake Koocanusa. Just a short distance off the main paved road, it's well worth the detour whether you are out for a quick sightseeing cruise or hunting for a dramatic overnight spot. As you work your way around the loop, you will find numerous offshoot trails branching across open grassy meadows and weaving through the timber to the bluff's edge. While several prime campsites are visible directly from the main loop, the best hidden gems require a bit of exploration down these side spurs. Most camping options are concentrated toward the eastern end of the trail, while the western exit side tightens and narrows as it cuts through dense stands of pine trees. The drive itself keeps things interesting with a couple of fun, mildly challenging hill climbs, a few deep mud puddles, and standard regional ruts. Expect reliable 1 to 2 bars of cell service throughout most of the loop. The trail receives no winter maintenance.
Difficulty
Rated 2 under dry conditions, though it can quickly become impassable when wet. The track is mostly a narrow single lane, so you will likely need to reverse to find a wider spot if you encounter oncoming traffic, especially through the tighter pine forest on the western end. Drivers will encounter a small rocky hill section, occasional deep mud holes, and clear evidence of heavy rutting. Avoid this trail during spring breakup or immediately following heavy rainstorms, when the slick, muddy soil can easily bog down a vehicle.
