Sawmill Lake to Douglas Lake Ranch is a scenic dirt and gravel route perfect for beginner offroaders and overland enthusiasts looking for a relaxed drive through the diverse terrain of British Columbia's interior. Spanning approximately 5 miles with an easy technical rating of 2, this trail begins near the shores of Sawmill Lake and winds westward, offering a smooth journey accessible to most high-clearance four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles. As you travel along Jimmy FSR and transition onto the Salmon River Forest Service Road (FSR), the dense, heavily forested canopy gradually opens up to reveal beautiful rolling hills, wide-open meadows, and active pastures. The trail offers scenic views of Nash Creek and the surrounding valley, with elevations fluctuating gently between 2,980 and 3,410 feet. Although the route lies close to Douglas Lake and Crown land, access is restricted by a locked gate and private property boundary associated with the historic Douglas Lake Ranch. Because through-travel is blocked, offroaders must treat this trail as an out-and-back route, turning around at the gate and respecting all local signage. The area near the start of the trail at Sawmill Lake is popular for trout fishing and rustic camping, making it an excellent base camp for a day of exploring the surrounding forest service roads.
