Trail Overview
This scenic 5.3-mile point-to-point route from Jimmy Lake to Sawmill Lake is ideal for beginner off-roaders and high-clearance vehicles looking for a peaceful drive through beautiful forested terrain with minimal traffic. Starting near Jimmy Lake at an elevation of approximately 4,298 feet, the trail descends roughly 920 feet over its length to end at Sawmill Lake, which sits at about 3,360 feet. The trail primarily consists of a well-maintained unpaved surface, though drivers should be prepared for soft dirt and rutted areas, particularly during the spring snowmelt. High-clearance four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicles will easily navigate this trail under normal conditions, making it highly accessible while still offering a genuine back-country feel.
Along the route, drivers will parallel portions of Sunlight Creek and Nash Creek, winding through lush valleys with options to explore numerous intersecting side trails. The main technical challenges are limited to deep ruts and mud patches that can accumulate in low-lying sections, requiring basic line selection but no specialized rock crawling gear. The route culminates at Sawmill Lake, where off-roaders can drive directly onto a unique dike and jetty structure extending into the middle of the water, providing excellent opportunities for photography, fishing, or a quiet lakeside break.
