Trail Overview
True to its name, Prairie Road is a scenic out-and-back route that winds through the timber and culminates at an open backcountry prairie and grassy meadow. Tucked at the edge of the clearing, a scenic dispersed campsite sits on a rise, offering sweeping views across the grassy fields below to the rugged mountain peaks beyond. If you aren't ready to turn around at the meadow, the main track continues deeper into the woods, linking into a vast web of side trails waiting to be explored. As you travel along Prairie Road, you will quickly notice it serves as a central artery for a popular OHV riding zone, especially south of the road. The surrounding forest is a true "choose-your-own-adventure" maze of trails that weave through the trees, with endless singletrack for dirt bikes and narrow two-track offshoots for ATVs and side-by-sides. Drivers and riders can expect weak but consistent cell reception (about one bar) throughout the corridor.
Difficulty
After you turn off the main highway, the road starts as an easy, wide, well-graded gravel surface suitable for almost any vehicle. However, once you pass the local gravel pit, maintenance drops off, and the track gets progressively bumpier and rougher as you near the prairie. High clearance is recommended for the upper stretch, and airing down will make the bumpy ride into the meadow much more comfortable.
