Trail Overview
This is a functional, scenic dirt route through the woods connecting travelers to the highway and providing access to the Johnson Lake recreation area. It offers a great way to traverse the region while staying off paved roads and spending more time in the backcountry. The trail winds through forested areas with occasional clearings. The clearings provide scenic breaks in the forest canopy, and as you are traveling through open range, keep a sharp lookout for cattle on the road. Wildlife viewing opportunities are frequent here; keep an eye out for elk, deer, and raptors overhead. The majority of the route is a pleasant woodland track, though it can be a bit bumpy in sections with periodic mud holes and light ruts. The westernmost end of the trail transitions into a nice, graded gravel section. Dispersed camping is possible in several of the clearings along the route. These are unimproved sites, and users must be fully self-sufficient. Cell service ranges from 1 to 2 bars and may fluctuate depending on your exact location in the trees.
