Trail Overview
Porcupine Hills Trail 44 begins directly off the main road and is clearly labeled at the trailhead. Open to vehicles up to 72 inches wide, this dirt trail winds predominantly through dense tree cover, featuring roots and varied forest terrain. Note that a seasonal closure is in effect from September 1st through February 28th. As you break out into the open valley, prepare for a steep, straight prairie 100-meter descent that delivers you to trail marker 45. From here, heading west onto trail marker 46 loops you smoothly back toward the main road for a rewarding loop. Alternatively, if you are looking for a steep and demanding climb, turn east toward trail marker 43.
Difficulty
This trail follows uneven, rutted dirt with loose rocks, mud holes, and other obstacles. Potential water crossings may reach up to one foot deep, and a steep 100-meter grade drops into the valley. The route is only one vehicle wide and is closed from September 1 through February 28.
